Candle, Candle, Burning Bright

Article by Lisa R Dinnin

My favorite candles to burn are Christmas candles. I put more candles out at that time of the year than any other. I like thin, tall candles in red, green, and white for the table, especially if they look like candy canes; round candles that look like ornaments for the living room; and other scented candles for anywhere in the house. Pillar candles are also nice since they are bigger and will last longer than the others will. The best scent is bayberry, which is very hard to find. In lieu of that, I will get pine, berry, mint, and cherry scented candles. These are so lovely to look at during the Christmas season and they make the whole house smell better. They especially look nice when the table is ready for dinner and company. You really cannot go wrong with Yankee Candles. They are easy to buy in many stores, such as Bed Bath and Beyond. I also like homemade candles and am considering getting some made of beeswax or soy at Christmas boutiques–another good place to get them. They are said to be more environmentally friendly than regular wax candles. Handmade candles are unique and also make great gifts. I also like to burn candles on the bathroom floor if it’s cold weather and I am in the bathtub or shower. It warms up the room and smells good as well. For the bathroom, I prefer floral or citrus scents, like gardenia or lemon. They are very refreshing. I keep an eye on them but have never had a problem with them. I enjoy buying such candles at stores like Cost Plus World Market, which has a good selection of them. Hallmark even carries candles like this. They are not difficult to locate. One more place I like to buy candles from is the cosmetics company Yves Rocher. They are online and also do mail and phone orders. They specialize in floral scents but also deal in Christmas scents when it is that time of the year. Their prices for candles are very reasonable, and they even include gift bags. I occasionally burn Halloween candles as well. They are not always scented, but they come in cute little orange and black ceramic holders and tend to be more like tealights, which I also love. Tealights do not last very long, though, and must be replaced often. I don’t mind, because I love them.
