Candles, Candles, and more Candles!

Article by Lisa R Dinnin

Warm Vanilla, Clean cotton, Apple pie, Honeydew melon…these are just some of my favorite candle scents. Each one is so unique, so different, and pleasing in it’s own special way. Candles do so much more than just light a room. They fill the air with lovely aromas, provide a warm glow for an intimate occasion, provide tranquility after a hard day at work, and turn a house into a home. I would definitely consider myself to be a “candle” person. I love candles, whether they be a warm, familiar scent or a new unique one. I burn different scents depending on my mood, or what I’m doing. For instance, I love the smell of clean cotton when I’m cleaning my house; but when I’m baking, I would prefer the aroma of warm vanilla. When I take a nice warm bubble bath, I enjoy some sort of ocean or breeze scented candle. Candles come in all different shapes, sizes, scents, and more importantly brands. While I have to admit that the shape, size, and scent are all important factors, depending on your use, nothing, in my opinion, is more important than the brand. Although there are several pleasing and unique candles out there, my favorite is without a doubt Yankee. There is nothing better than the smell of a brand new yankee candle. Candles also make wonderful gifts. Who wouldn’t love to get a daffodil scented candle in a nice large jar, or a box of raspberry scented votives? I think candles are pretty much a universal gift. There has got to be a scent for everybody out there! Homemade candles have also become a great gift. You can get all of the supplies you need at your local craft store and create your own unusual and unique scents. You can even start your own small business and make a little extra money. I don’t think I will ever give up my love of candles. I love to give candles, to receive candles, to buy candles, and to make them. I love that there’s always a new scent that I didn’t see the last time. I like picking a few different scents out and then burning them together to create my own special scent. I pray that candles never “go out of style” for I don’t know what I would do! So, the next time you’re out shopping for a gift, be it a birthday, Christmas, or housewarming, remember that everyone loves a nice candle with a pleasing scent. You really can’t go wrong with it!

The colors of each candles have different meanings as well and many people, although not knowledgeable about the different colors, are at the very least interested in the meanings. Brown color is usually associated with balance and they eliminate indecisiveness and improve your concentration. Brown candles are usually derives their brown color from the candle making wax used by the candle maker. If additives are used, these can also add up to the color depth. Throughout history, brown candles are usually dyed to reflect sacred or divine qualities and elements or even to represent a specific deity. So, if you’re into something, you will know what type of candles suit up your current mood. There is something innate within them that make you hope for things to come your way. They are made mainly out of wax and there are various kinds of wax you can possibly have such as soybean wax, paraffin wax and also beeswax. Each wax kind has its own attributes and advantages and has a really slightly various appearance and consistency. Since many colors have similar or complimentary meanings, make sure you choose the right ones that specifically reflect your needs and personality. Healers and practitioners of alternative medicine will use them to create an atmosphere of healing, stuffed to the specific needs of their patients. In aromatherapy, brown candles are matched with complimentary scents to create a soothing and peaceful space. Religious society merely uses them in a number of different ways and those who practice Wicca use them to cast spells or to represent the God, Goddess and the four elements. At the other end of the religious spectrum, Christians and Catholics use brown candles in their Advent wreaths to symbolize Christ and are traditionally used in these wreaths. Some adaptations have featured other brown candles usage for they are also often used during meditation because they give a very soothing and help bring a calm atmosphere to get your mind and body in a peaceful state. They also help enhance the meditation while providing a deeper meditation experience. You can put together candles by theme such as mixing together some gold, burgundy and placing them in a table set up that includes colored glassware, brass trimmed coasters, trays and rustic jars or old perfume bottles. Placing olive green or brown candles in a shallow celadon dish with some water, grass patches and flat stones give an Asian feel to your room or table. For more creative candle ideas, you can also try placing some of them in tiny sauce dishes, unused ashtrays or in recycled jam jars.

Try to find the right ones that will compliment the home interiors while at the same time giving a great ambience to where they are usually placed. There are several ground stores that sell brown candles and if they don’t satisfy you, resort your attention to online stores. Junk shops and antique markets are good places for unique style of brown candles. Another option is to pick unique pieces while travelling.

Candle, Candle, Burning Bright

Article by Lisa R Dinnin

My favorite candles to burn are Christmas candles. I put more candles out at that time of the year than any other. I like thin, tall candles in red, green, and white for the table, especially if they look like candy canes; round candles that look like ornaments for the living room; and other scented candles for anywhere in the house. Pillar candles are also nice since they are bigger and will last longer than the others will. The best scent is bayberry, which is very hard to find. In lieu of that, I will get pine, berry, mint, and cherry scented candles. These are so lovely to look at during the Christmas season and they make the whole house smell better. They especially look nice when the table is ready for dinner and company. You really cannot go wrong with Yankee Candles. They are easy to buy in many stores, such as Bed Bath and Beyond. I also like homemade candles and am considering getting some made of beeswax or soy at Christmas boutiques–another good place to get them. They are said to be more environmentally friendly than regular wax candles. Handmade candles are unique and also make great gifts. I also like to burn candles on the bathroom floor if it’s cold weather and I am in the bathtub or shower. It warms up the room and smells good as well. For the bathroom, I prefer floral or citrus scents, like gardenia or lemon. They are very refreshing. I keep an eye on them but have never had a problem with them. I enjoy buying such candles at stores like Cost Plus World Market, which has a good selection of them. Hallmark even carries candles like this. They are not difficult to locate. One more place I like to buy candles from is the cosmetics company Yves Rocher. They are online and also do mail and phone orders. They specialize in floral scents but also deal in Christmas scents when it is that time of the year. Their prices for candles are very reasonable, and they even include gift bags. I occasionally burn Halloween candles as well. They are not always scented, but they come in cute little orange and black ceramic holders and tend to be more like tealights, which I also love. Tealights do not last very long, though, and must be replaced often. I don’t mind, because I love them.
